RCS Haven E-Bulletin - August 2016

Greetings, and welcome to our bulletin full of information on exciting Russian events.
RCS Haven is welcoming anyone who is interested in studying Russian language, literature and culture. We have English and Russian language lessons. There are a library, Art studio for children and Web-design Studio.
Also, the Centre provides consultations in law, finance and other aspects of work and business in Russia and Britain.

NEWS

 
We are looking forward to the start of the new academic year 2016/17 and to welcoming all of our students, new and returning.
Our Russian and English language classes for adults will resume after the summer break on Monday 5th September at 11 Duke Street, G4 0UL.
The Russian school for children reopens on 27th August. The school’s lessons will take place on Saturdays, at The Adelphi Centre, 12 Commercial Road, Glasgow, G5 0PQ.

Regular events in Scotland

Orthodox Church Services:
The following Scottish churches hold regular/semi-regular Orthodox services (all welcome):
Glasgow: The Parish of St. Kentigern (Russian Orthodox). Services held in Govan Old Church, 866 Govan Road, Glasgow, G51 3UU.
Edinburgh: Orthodox Community of St. Andrew (a mixture of Orthodox faiths. Services held in the Chapel of St. Andrew, 2 Meadow Lane, Edinburgh, EH8 9NR.

Art studio for Children
Art lessons for children are undergoing in RCS Haven.
Under supervision of experienced teachers, a professional artist and a specialist in early development, children study the basics of drawing and painting, language development and drama. All children are welcome on Fridays from 5:30pm till 7:30pm.

Cossacks from Rostov on Don are going to participate in Highland Games, which is going to be part of Bagpipe World Championship. They will compete with Scottish athletes in the following disciplines: Fencing, Belt Wrestling and Fisticuffs.
Come and join this event, athletes will need your support.

Events in Edinburgh and the rest of Scotland

 
1 - 7 August
The Moscow State Circus returns to the UK with its latest and greatest production to date. 'Zhelaniy' is based on the Russian folklore story of Cvetik-Semicvetik, or "the flower with seven colors", by Benjamin Losin, where each of the petals represent a wish and is the perfect back drop for what is undoubtedly the greatest and most famous circus on earth.

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is the largest arts festival in the world and takes place every August for three weeks in Edinburgh, Scotland’s capital city.
Every year thousands of performers take to hundreds of stages all over Edinburgh to present shows for every taste. From big names in the world of entertainment to unknown artists looking to build their careers, the festival caters for everyone and includes theatre, comedy, dance, physical theatre, circus, cabaret, children’s shows, musicals, opera, music, spoken word, exhibitions and events.

The Edinburgh International Festival is an unparalleled celebration of the performing arts and an annual meeting point for peoples of all nations. 27 May – 11 September
With their perfect synthesis of typography, design and illustration, Soviet children’s books in the 1920s and 1930s revolutionised the picture book form against a turbulent political backdrop. Subjects ranged from folk tales and contemporary children's verse to books on the modern world and Soviet education. The exhibition will explore this period of unprecedented innovation, from the pre-revolutionary 'Silver Age' of Russian illustration to the pioneers of Soviet children's publishing.

The Bolshoi Ballet has announced a three-week residency at the Royal Opera House in summer 2016. The Moscow-based company will perform at Covent Garden over three weeks in July and August.
London audiences will have a chance to see their productions of Don Quixote, Swan Lake, The Taming of the Shrew, The Flames of Paris and Le Corsaire.
Dancers scheduled to perform include The Royal Ballet’s Natalia Osipova, who will perform as chief guest artist with the Bolshoi. Maria Alexandrova, Ekaterina Krysanova, Olga Smirnova, Svetlana Zakharova, Semyon Chudin, David Hallberg, Denis Rodkin, Vladislav Lantratov and Ruslan Skvortsov are also scheduled to appear.

A dying poet recalls events of his childhood during World War II as well as key moments of the Russian people during the tumultuous events of the 20th century.

On a space station orbiting the ocean-covered planet Solaris, cosmonaut Kris Kelvin arrives to investigate a series of mysterious and bizarre occurrences among the crew. What he discovers are supernatural phenomena that cause repressed and haunting memories to take on physical form, including that of Kelvin’s late wife.

As a part of St Martin’s Embassy and Cultural Institute Series, Victor Korotich, opera man of The Mariinsky Theatre, will give a lunchtime concert in London.
Programme includes such famous compositions as Andrey Bolkonsky’s Aria from War and Peace (Prokofiev), Onegin’s arioso from Eugene Onegin, ‘Ballad of Tomsky’ and  Song of Tomsky’ from Queen of Spades (Tchaikovsky) as well as a list of Russian romance songs.
