RCS Haven E-Bulletin - February 2017

Greetings, and welcome to our bulletin full of information on exciting Russian events.

RCS Haven is welcoming anyone who is interested in studying Russian language, literature and culture. We have English and Russian language lessons. There are a library, Art studio for children and Web-design Studio.
Also, the Centre provides consultations in law, finance and other aspects of work and business in Russia and Britain.


NEWS

Russian GCSE and GCE (A-level) exams

Dear friends,
We are delighted to inform you that our centre "RCS Haven" is now an official examination centre providing Russian GCSE and GCE (A-level) exams.
The registration for exams taking place in summer 2017 is now open. The deadline is 15 February.
The exam will take place in Glasgow at 11 Duke Street according to the national exams timetable.
We provide individual consultations for students to help indicate their level of knowledge in Russian and the marks which they can achieve in the exam.
Following this consultation, you will be able to make a decision on the appropriate year for registration to avoid any disappointment with grades.
 
We also provide several classes for preparation before exams.

Speak Russian? Thinking of a new career?
Police Scotland is currently recruiting both police officers and special constables into the organization.  Police Scotland is particularly keen to encourage applications from under-represented members from our communities. In their current recruitment campaign, they are looking to engage with potential applicants from all ethnic minorities and a variety of different backgrounds in an effort to be more representative of the diverse communities that they police.

RCS Haven is looking for Chess and Russian teachers for the Saturday school.
Also, we are looking for volunteers.

EDUCATION 

The School of Russian Centre in Scotland  Haven 
Classes for children are based on Russian teaching methods for primary school level native and non-native speakers.
In the current school year, lessons for all classes except the youngest take place between 11.00 and 2.00pm on Saturdays at Adelphi Centre, 12 Commercial Road, Glasgow G5 0PQ. [email protected]

Art lessons for children are undergoing in RCS Haven.
Under supervision of experienced teachers, a professional artist and a specialist in early development, children study the basics of drawing and painting, language development and drama. All children are welcome on Fridays from 5:30pm till 7:30pm.

Russian and English language courses for adults 
Classes for those who want to study Russian and English language.
Russian lessons on Mondays at Beginners from 18.00 to 19.00; Advanced from 19.00 to 20.00, Intensive Beginners group on Wednesdays from 18.00. to 19.30 (11 Duke Street) and Saturdays at 11.00 (Adelphi Centre).
English lessons on Thursdays at 7.0pm.

7-12 February
A new original staging of M. Bulgakov’s Morphine by Victor Sobchak and his young cast of actors at experimental Etcetera theatre will be shown to public between Tuesday 7th – Sunday 12th February. 
“This a tragic story of a countryside doctor who became a drug addict. Dark, sexual and cruel.”
The play will run in Russian with English subtitles.

Project1917 Free History is a Russian social media project that is bringing the centennial to life. A team of young historians is posting daily writings by about 300 historical figures who witnessed and participated in history as it occurred. Pushkin House will host a discussion with the two founders of Project1917, Mikahil Zygar and Karen Shainyan, and other members of the team. Robert Chandler and Julia Sutton-Mattocks will discuss two of Platonov’s works, A Sparrow’s Journey and Fourteen Little Red Huts and Other Plays. Both were recently published in English. Economic and social changes, the abolition of serfdom, and increased opposition to the Romanov rulers were all major contributors to the revolutions. Discover another Russia. The forum is organised by the Russian Business & Culture Society, founded in 2005 at the London School of Economics and Political Science. The mission of RB&C is to foster UK-Russia co-operation and serve as platform, which connects Russian-speaking students and professionals.

Maslenitsa is the Russian Sun Festival – a celebration of the end of winter chills and the start of spring, of warmth, of hope, of growth. Not surprisingly, it is a particularly big deal in Russia!

Join us to watch the Vakhtangov Theatre’s production of Anna Karenina, directed and choreographed by Angelica Cholina. With music by Alfred Schnittke, this production interprets Tolstoy’s classic novel through dance. Without dialogue or subtitles. The film will be followed by a short Q&A session.
